Harry Potter….just the name is enough to bring up visions of ghosts, witches, wizards and magical creatures. How many times have we wanted a house elf like Dobby or to climb aboard a dragon and fly above Hogwarts? There are many special creatures in Harry Potter but some of them will capture your heart. I want to talk about a few of my personal favorites and why I still get that special feeling when I think of them.

The house elves Kreacher and Dobby are two creatures I came to cherish. Dobby especially with his unfailing loyalty to Harry Potter made me tear up a number of times throughout all of the books and movies. His death in the last book had me in tears much more than losing the other characters I had grown to know and love. He was cute with his spindly little arms and big eyes. The way he talked and his undying love of Harry made me want to pick him up and hug him tight.

Other magical creatures that deserve a notable mention are Hedwig, and of course all of Hagrid’s pets. They might not have all been cute and cuddly but the devotion Hagrid showed to them made them the best magical creatures of all.

Professor Snape is the best villain for Harry Potter. When Harry arrives at Hogwarts, Snape appears to hate him vehemently. Throughout the story he appears to betray Harry several times and even kills his dear Prof. Dumbledore. However, there is always something behind Snape that makes him seem like a villain who can be bad, but yet is on Harry’s side.

Snape was teased by Harry’s dad, James. He hated James, however he loved Lilly Potter. This love made him desire to protect Harry as he grew up. He had to be a bad guy to take care of Harry because Voldemort was very intelligent and would have seen through him if he had not been willing to kill for him. Snape knew where to draw the line and where his loyalties lied however, and would not push beyond that line.

Professor Snape was good for Harry because he was once a Death Eater and Voldemort trusted him. He did things to show Voldemort that he was right to trust him. By doing this he could stay close to Harry, train him, and protect him. He was a villain who in the end turned out to be the good guy. Even when he was a villain it was slightly apparent that he did care about Harry and would in the end protect him at any cost.

Given the fact that there exists plenty of Harry and Hermione love stories out there that would likely shock the hair off a poodle, it’s a good thing to remind readers that love exists in many forms and gradients. The ability to love is boundless and possessed of a remarkable capacity that cannot ever be measured.

Society is fond of labelling love stories as romantic. In our every day lives with media and marketers shaping society’s perceptions it is easy to forget the word love is not only used to convey romance. Any story of caring or concern where the well being of one is placed and held above the well being of one’s self is a love story.

In the stories presented by Rowling in the Harry Potter universe, we can thus say accurately that yes Harry and Hermione had a love story. The love story existed in canon where Harry and Hermione often many times took actions to protect the body of each other as well as nurture the mind and the soul. It was not a romantic love but it was a kind of love. They did love and care for each other as brother and sister.

Here are a few of our favorite fun facts…
When they first met, Daniel was reported to have a huge crush on co-star Emma Watson.
Radcliffe is shorter than most leading men and stands only about 5′ 6″
Daniel’s parents originally didn’t want him to audition for the role of Harry because they were worried about it making his childhood abnormal. Columbus, the directory, convinced them at a play to reconsider.
Daniel received 14 million for playing Harry in The Order of the Phoenix – he received only 110,000 for his role in the first film.
Daniel has his own apartment but still asks his mother to do his laundry for him since he hates ironing.
In early 2011 Daniel admitted that he’d stopped drinking altogether because he was worried he’d obtain an alcohol problem.
Now you know – your favorite character is human!

Now, I like “Harry Potter” the way it is, but Rowling doesn’t go too many places with the Trio and friends: London, Surrey, and the Scottish Highlands. Obviously, part of this is because of what she knows about each; she was born and lived in England, but moved to Scotland much later. But you just have to ask: with so much space to use, where else could Rowling have taken Harry?

Choice 1: Wales. It’s connected to England geographically, so the students could have fled there readily enough without worrying about how. Plus, like Scotland, some native Welshmen don’t particularly care for the English who subdued them centuries ago, including Voldemort. You say you want a revolution…

Choice 2: Ireland. Not Northern Ireland, which is part of England and still fought over, but the rest of it. It’s free of British power, and therefore the Ministry of Magic should have no reach there. And again, the Irish would love a good scrap with the English, right?

Or Portugal, if she writes what she knows? Or France? The problem is that any of those places wouldn’t work: the kids can’t get to them, and Rowling wrote about Britain and the British.

My favorite Harry Potter character is Harry himself. My guess is he is the most popular character, if only for the fact that he is the central character in the stories. To me, Harry has the appeal of the heroic under-dog. The reluctant champion who does not always have the answer, or know his own strength.

Harry is also an orphan, and I think everyone relates to that, at least in spirit. I know I have had times in my life when I felt like an orphan, or so I imagined, and something in the way Harry deals with his difficulties with humility and courage is very admirable and inspiring to me.

The other characters in Harry’s world are loveable as well, both friends and foes. They are wonderfully drawn by Rowling, and we learn a great deal of them through Harry’s eyes. Brilliant Hermione, steadfast Ron, fatherly Dumbledore are all part of a wonderful cast that millions have enjoyed.

The Harry Potter series is not just about wizards and magic and a fantastic hidden world, it is the story of a boy who overcomes adversity and grows into an identity that might have stayed hidden forever.

I like witches and dragons and the like as much as anybody, I guess, but it is the characters that really take hold and make a good story a lasting treasure.

Forbes magazine recently reported that of all of Hollywood’s mega-grossing on-screen couples that it is Harry Potter’s beloved Rupert Grint and Emma Watson top the list with the Harry Potter movies having earned the pair a staggering 6.3 billion thus far. And since the final film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is slated for release in the eminent future, the franchised is expected to hit 7 billion thanks to the chemistry of this pair. Now, a lot of readers may not know about Hollywood power couples from year’s past like Spencer Tracey and Katherine Hepburn or Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, but for those readers who do (and can still see the steam their unions emitted), the reason they are not listed on the Forbes list is that the publication only looked back 10 years while compiling their results.Additionally, for those wondering about Shrek and Fiona, Forbes did not include animated films.Other couples who made the list but trailed Grint and Watson are Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings), Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic and Revolutionary Road even though the “ten year rule” was bent a little for Titanic to be included). And for those that are screaming what about Bella and Edward? it should be pointed out that the Forbes list was based on box office gross dollars (and not popularity), and since the Twilight films have only grossed a little under 2 billion they fall behind those included in the complete Forbes list.

If your child loves the Harry Potter series and has expressed an interest in possibly doing some of their own creative writing as a hobby (or more), why not consider getting them a book that might spark their imagination and fuel those energies even further?Following are three books that we think are particularly useful to keep that creative spark fueled.Unjournaling: Daily Writing Exercises that are NOT Personal, NOT Introspective, NOT Boring! (Dawn DiPrince, Cheryl Miller Thurston) includes over 200 writing prompts to get the writing process started without asking for personal thoughts. The exercises encourage lighthearted creativity in a quirky and challenging way.Once Upon a Time: Creative Writing Fun for Kids (Annie Buckley) is 50 pages filled with creative ideas intended to inspire storytellers as well as teaching how a story is constructed, character development, and settings. This book has been described as a “great tool” for the imagination.Rip the Page! Adventures in Creative Writing (Karen Benke) includes ideas, inspiration, and experiments meant to spark imagination and get the writing flowing in the form of poems, stories, letters, and more. Readers are encouraged to write, brainstorm, explore, and imagine in 256 fun and motivating pages. There are a lot more options out there and a trip to your local library, bookstore, or even Amazon will surely yield a title or two to get your little one on the road to the next great series either Potter style or a style all their own.

If you know someone who has all the Potter books but still yearns for more “all things Harry,” then why not consider giving them a set of the classic LEGO brand building blocks with a Harry Potter theme? No longer restricted to the primary color building blocks, LEGO has a series/collection dedicated to Potter fans that include a video game, brick products and a board game. The brick products include a Harry Potter Quiddicth Match (153 pieces), a Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle (1,290 pieces), a Harry Potter Hagrid’s Hut (442 pieces), a Harry Potter The Burrows (568 pieces), and a Harry Potter Hogwart’s Express (646 pieces) in the collection. The reviews of all of these products have been considerably favorable with comments such as “the set is beautiful” and “the set has a lot of cool hidden things” as well as “I was amazed at the size of the toy!” However, even thought the finished pieces can be considered large, keep in mind that as with all LEGO products the individual pieces can present a choking hazard and are not recommended for children under three years old. But older than that, enjoy everything these amazing toys have to offer imagination, building skills, creativity, and a true sense of accomplishment! That sounds like a winning combination for any gift idea.

While the release of the final films is exciting, another opening took fan’s hearts this year. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter had its grand opening this summer. While it may not be a wise idea to go this year (with lines reaching six hours on day one) here’s what you can look forward to.What you will be most eager to see is the full scale replica of Hogwarts castle. Walk through the infamous School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and visit Dumbledore’s office as well as the Gryffindor common room. Hogwarts is also home to the park’s biggest ride: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. So alongside viewing the castle for yourself, you get to participate in one of Harry’s quests.Other rides involve the magical creatures from the Harry Potter books. Guests can ride a Hippogriff on Flight of the Hippogriff or choose from two dangerous dragons on Dragon Challenge.Universal Studios went a step farther than providing unforgettable rides. The park makers also recreated the restaurant and shops from the stories. Build up your supply of magical equipment at Dervish and Banges and Ollivander’s wand shop. Or you can visit the Owl Post, Zonko’s , and Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods. Just don’t forget to indulge in some magical candy at Honeydukes, too . . . although, you may want to avoid some of those Bertie Bott’s Beans. To end the day off right, down a good ol’ Butterbeer and British meal at the Three Broomsticks. The movies let us watch Harry’s adventures come to life; however, at the Wizarding World theme park, we get to live those journeys for ourselves. Wait until the crowds die down and then plan your visit.
